The linguistic approaches of the 20th century and their impact on Slovene studies, with emphasis on post-structural linguistic approaches, especially those that influenced modern translation studies. Linguistic description and standard language ideology. Orientation within the central manuals dealing with Slovene studies and their social status. Linguistic description and the digital media. Linguistic description and prescription. Linguistics and linguistic descriptions; methods of linguistic description. Language norms and codification. Implicit and explicit norms. The currents in the development of the Slovene literary language norm, and the status of Slovene linguistic manuals within these currents. We establish a clear relationship between linguistic description as a linguistic activity and prescription as a non-linguistic activity. The plurality of methodological approaches in linguistics and their (apparent) non-plurality in Slovene linguistics is presented.
Students learn about the central linguistic manuals for Slovene, both traditional as well as those introduced by the new media; they critically evaluate these, especially from the transla’or’s point of view.
