The course introduces students to the main aspects of the workings of the Japanese language from the perspective of pragmatics, i.e. to the achievements of research on Japanese in the past 25 years, gained by the indigenous approaches (the so-called “bunshoron” of Tokieda, Nagano, Hayashi) and introduction to the development of the theories of pragmatics, text linguistics and discourse analysis, in the following subfields:
- textual pragmatics (cohesivity, coherence);
- discourse (discourse analysis, discourse functions)
- honorifics (paradigms and the principles of use)
- linguistic registers in communication (speech levels, the repertoire of registers, the principles of use)
- simultaneously, while working on specific topics, students acquire the theoretical framefork required for the analysis of linguistic phenomena in Japanese from the perspective of pragmatics.
